Short bio

Joshua Lawrence is Professor of Quantitative Research Methods in the Faculty of Educational Sciences at the University of Oslo. His work focuses on adolescent literacy, academic vocabulary, data-informed instruction, and the measurement of language and reading development.

Longer bio

Joshua Lawrence is Professor of Quantitative Research Methods in the Faculty of Educational Sciences at the University of Oslo. His research examines how students develop the language, vocabulary, and reading comprehension needed for learning across school subjects, with particular attention to adolescent literacy, multilingual learners, data-informed instruction, and valid assessment. He co-leads the BEAM research group, which brings together work in education, AI, and measurement. Before joining the University of Oslo, he held faculty positions at the University of California, Irvine, completed postdoctoral work at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and worked as a teacher and literacy coach in Boston Public Schools.
